Essential Tips on Packing and Moving a Lawn Mower

If you have a backyard or a garden, you probably have a lawn mower too. Unless you are about to move from a house to a small flat somewhere in London, chances are that you would probably want to take this important piece of gardening equipment with you. However, it would be wrong of you to assume that you can just chuck it at the back of a moving truck and let your movers take care of the rest. If not prepared properly for a transportation, these machines can pose a great threat to everyone around.

Will professional movers agree to move your lawn mower?

You may think that the moving company you have hired will have nothing against handling your lawn mower. Well, that is not quite the case. The movers will refuse to collect and transport this item of yours if you have failed to:

  • Empty its tank
  • Clean it well
  • Remove its blades and pack them separately
  • Disconnect the spark plugs

This is so because the above-listed steps will make the moving of this machine safer. Also, keep in mind that this is not part of moving experts’ job. It is simply something that you will need to take care of.

Empty the tank

You need to drain the oil and gas out of your lawn mower. These are both categorized as dangerous materials and the majority of relocation businesses simply will not agree to move the mower if its tank is still full. But even if you are planning to move your gardening machines with your personal vehicle, you should under no circumstance skip this step. Oil and gas can easily combust and lead to life-threatening accidents.

Clean it well

This is something which you should do with absolutely everything you plan to take with you to your new home and not only with your gardening equipment. Otherwise, you may bring in dirt and mud inside the transit vehicle and damage some of your more valuable and delicate possessions. The only things which you do not need to wipe and clean and those items you plan to toss away. For them, you will only need to use quality junk removals in London. In that way, you will avoid fees for irresponsible disposal by your local council.

Detach and pack the blades

The blades of a lawn mower are quite sharp. That is why it is best if you remove and pack them separately. Be very cautious when you do that, however, because you may easily injure yourself. Put on a pair of protective gloves so that you can avoid accidentally cutting yourself.

Disconnect the spark plug

Even if you have fully drained all liquids from the mower, the risk of combustion will remain unless you remove the spark plugs of the machine. If you do not know how to do that, check the manual or simply ask a local electrician to do that for you.

Once you complete all of these steps, load the lawn mower on moving vehicle using a van ramp. Once inside the transit truck, secure the machine with straps and belts to prevent it from shifting during transportation.
